Sept. 3
God commissions Joshua Joshua 1:1–11 After Moses’ death, God commanded Joshua to cross the Jordan with the Israelites. God told Joshua to be strong and courageous, and promised to be with him.
2. Sept. 9 Crossing the Jordan Joshua 3-4 God told Joshua to lead the people across the Jordan and held back the water while they crossed. Joshua had them set up twelve stones in Gilgal to mark their safe passage.
3. Sept. 16 Gideon the judge Judges 6:11–7:23 God called Gideon to deliver Israel from oppressors. God granted Gideon’s request for signs of God’s commitment. With 300 men, Gideon routed the Midianite army.
4. Sept. 23 Ruth and Naomi Ruth After the death of her husband, Ruth went to Judah with her mother-in-law, Naomi. Boaz saw Ruth gleaning in his fields and helped her. Ruth and Boaz married.
5. Sept. 30 The call of Samuel 1 Samuel 3 Samuel was raised in the temple by the priest, Eli. One night God called young Samuel by name. It was the beginning of Samuel’s prophetic role in Israel.

Oct. 8: Thanksgiving (Canada)
Saul becomes king 1 Samuel 9:1–10:25 The people of Israel had demanded that Samuel appoint a king so they could be like other nations. God chose Saul and sent him to Samuel. Samuel anointed Saul as king.
7. Oct. 14 Samuel anoints David 1 Samuel 16:1–13 Saul disobeyed God and God sent Samuel to anoint another king for Israel. The sons of Jesse passed before Samuel. David, the youngest, was chosen by God to be king.
8. Oct. 21 David’s kindness 2 Samuel 4:4; 8:15–9:13 After David became king, he ruled justly. He restored the inheritance of King Saul’s grandson, the son of his friend Jonathan. He invited Mephibosheth to eat at his table.
9. Oct. 28 Building the temple of the Lord 1 Kings 6, 8 Solomon built a grand temple in Jerusalem and brought the ark of the covenant to rest there. Solomon’s prayer of dedication included both Israelites and foreigners.
10. Nov. 4 The prophet Elijah 1 Kings 19:1–16 Elijah ran away from Jezebel’s wrath. On Mt. Horeb, God met Elijah not in wind, earthquake, or fire, but in sheer silence. God said that Elisha would succeed Elijah.
11. Nov. 11 Elijah and Elisha 2 Kings 2:1–18 Elisha followed Elijah to the far side of the Jordan River and watched him being taken to heaven in a fiery chariot. Elisha inherited Elijah’s mantle and prophetic power.

Nov. 22: Thanksgiving (United States)
King Josiah follows God 2 Kings 22:1–23:30 In Judah a book of the law was discovered. King Josiah realized that he and the people had not been faithful to God. He led the people in following God’s ways.
13. Nov. 25 The fall of Jerusalem 2 Kings 24:18–25:21 King Zedekiah rebelled against Babylonian rule. Soldiers captured the king, tore down Jerusalem’s walls, ransacked the temple, and took the people of Judah into exile.

Psalm 25
Jeremiah shared God’s promise of a righteous leader for Israel. The psalmist speaks of God leading the people in the paths of steadfast love and faithfulness.
2. Dec. 9

Second Sunday of Advent
John prepares the way Mark 1:1–8 John the Baptist proclaimed the good news in the wilderness. He urged people to repent and prepare for one who would come and baptize with the Holy Spirit.

Third Sunday
of Advent
Mary says yes Luke 1:26–56 The angel Gabriel visited Mary and said she would give birth to a son and name him Jesus. This baby would be the Son of God. Mary visited Elizabeth and praised God.
4. Dec. 23

Fourth Sunday of Advent
Jesus is born Luke 2:1–20 Jesus was born in a Bethlehem stable while Joseph and Mary were there registering in a census. An angel told nearby shepherds of the birth and they came to see Jesus.
5. Dec. 30 Jesus leads Mark 1:16–45 Jesus called followers to himself. He taught with authority and people were amazed. He cast out an unclean spirit and healed many. Word of his power spread.

Epiphany Sunday
Friends, faith, and forgiveness Mark 2:1–12 Four friends lowered a paralyzed man through the roof of a house where Jesus was teaching. Jesus forgave the man his sins and healed him. People were amazed.
7. Jan. 13 Jesus and Levi Mark 2:13–17 Jesus called Levi, a tax collector, to follow him. The religious leaders wondered why Jesus ate with sinners; Jesus said he had come to call not the righteous, but sinners.
8. Jan. 20 Followers and family Mark 3:13–35 Jesus named twelve apostles. His family came to restrain him because people said he was mad or possessed. Jesus said those who followed God were his family.
9. Jan. 27 Being made whole Mark 5:21–43 As Jesus was on his way to Jairus’ house, a woman touched his cloak and was healed. Jesus said that her faith had healed her. Jesus restored Jairus’ daughter to life.
10. Feb. 3 The disciples don't understand Mark 6:30–52 Jesus taught a large crowd and used five loaves and two fish to feed thousands. That evening Jesus walked across the water to rescue the disciples from the stormy sea.

Feb.13: Ash Wednesday
A woman confronts Jesus Mark 7:24–30 A Syrophoenician woman came to Jesus begging help for her child. She convinced Jesus to help foreigners well as his own people. Jesus healed the daughter.

First Sunday
in Lent
Arguing about greatness Mark 9:33–49 The disciples argued about who was the greatest. Jesus taught that humble acts like welcoming a child and offering water will  open the way to peace with others.
13. Feb. 24

Second Sunday in Lent
Jesus blesses children Mark 10:13–16 People brought children to Jesus. The disciples tried to turn them away but Jesus welcomed them and said that the kingdom belongs to children.

A difficult choice Mark 10:17–31 A young man found it difficult to give up wealth in exchange for heavenly treasure. God rewards those who give up property and leave family to follow God.

Jesus rides into Jerusalem Mark 11:1–11 Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey. Many people gathered along the way to spread cloaks, wave leafy branches, and shout, “Hosanna in the highest heaven.”

Fifth Sunday
in Lent
Jesus and the scribes Mark 12:28–40 Jesus agreed with the scribe who identified love of God and neighbor as the greatest commandments. He criticized leaders who looked pious but treated others badly.
4. March 24

Palm Sunday
Journey to the cross 14:32–15:47 Jesus shared a Passover meal with his disciples and predicted that one of them would betray him. He offered the disciples symbols of his body and blood.
5. March 31

Easter Sunday
An empty tomb Mark 16:1–8 Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome went to anoint Jesus’ body. In the tomb a young man told them Jesus had been raised. The women fled.
6. April 7 Jesus appears to the disciples Mark 16:9–20 Jesus appeared to Mary Magdalene and two other disciples before commissioning the eleven disciples to take his message into the world. Jesus then ascended into heaven.
7. April 14 Paul and Barnabas spread the good news Acts 13–14 Paul and Barnabas made their first missionary journey. They preached in Cyprus, then sailed to Antioch, and later preached in Iconium, Lystra, and Derbe.
8. April 21 Mission in Philippi Acts 16:11–40 Timothy joined Paul and Silas. Lydia and her household converted. Paul and Silas exorcised a demon and were imprisoned; they converted the jailer and his family.
9. April 28 Uproar in Thessalonica Acts 17:1–15 Paul preached about Jesus in a synagogue in Thessalonica. Some were persuaded to believe in Jesus but others became jealous. A mob searched for Paul and Silas.
10. May 5 The church in Corinth Acts 18:1–17;
1 Corinthians 13
Paul preached to Jews and Gentiles in Corinth for 18 months. Later he wrote to the Corinthian church, telling them that love matters more than every other good quality.
11. May 12 Paul in Jerusalem Acts 21:17–36 Paul went to Jerusalem and was welcomed by Jewish Christians. He traveled with them to the temple but Jews from Asia stirred up the crowd and Paul was taken prisoner.
12. May 19

Pentecost
Paul on trial Acts 24–26 Paul was put on trial before Felix for making trouble. Paul declared his innocence and belief in the resurrection. He appeared before Governor Festus and King Agrippa.
13.May 26 Paul’s journey ends in Rome Acts 27–28 Paul and other prisoners were put on a boat for Rome. A storm ran them aground in Malta but everyone was saved. Paul healed people there before sailing to Rome

Summer 2013 — God's Good Creation

1. June 2 God the creator Genesis 1:1–2:3 All of creation is God’s gift. After creating the earth and its creatures, God blessed and named all parts of creation good. Humankind is made in God’s image.
2. June 9 The majesty of God Psalm 8:3–9 The vastness and intricacy of creation shows God’s majesty. Human beings are small in relation to the created world but God has given them great responsibility.
3. June 16 God’s promise to creation Genesis 8:22; 9:8–17 After the flood, God made a covenant with Noah and Noah’s descendants and every living creature on the earth. The rainbow is the sign of this covenant.
4. June 23 God cares for the earth Psalm 104:10–30 The earth is full of God’s creatures. God provides sustenance and protection for all, from singing birds and human beings to the young lions and sea creatures.
5. June 30 God knows us Psalm 139:1–18 God has formed us in all our complexity and knows us inside and out, better than we know ourselves. Wherever we are, God is there. God’s ways are mysterious to us.
6. July 7 An outdoor celebration Leviticus 23:33–43; Deuteronomy 16:13–15 The Festival of Booths came at the end of harvest time. Families lived outdoors for seven days, remembering God’s provision and the Israelite exodus from Egypt.
7. July 14 A song for pilgrims Psalm 121 Pilgrims to Jerusalem sang this song on their journey. Help comes from God, creator of heaven and earth. We can trust in God’s care both day and night.
8. July 21 Lessons from birds and flowers Matthew 6:25–34 God cares for the birds and flowers. How much more then does God care for us? Strive for God’s righteousness and other things will be taken care of.
9. July 28 God is like . . . Psalm 19:14; Deut. 32:10–12; Matthew 23:37;
1 Kings 19:11–13
The Bible gives us many images of God. God is seen as our rock and redeemer, as a soaring eagle flying toward heaven, and as a mother hen. God is also found in silence.
10. Aug. 4 We are like . . . Psalm 1; 23; 42:1–5 The righteous are like trees that flourish because they are planted by streams. We are like sheep cared for by God the shepherd. We need God as deer thirst for water.
11. Aug. 11 Sharing the harvest Leviticus 23:22; Ruth 2 God told the people to leave part of their harvest for those who had no land. Boaz shared the bounty of his land with Ruth. He honored Ruth for her devotion to Naomi.
12. Aug. 18 A stone as witness to covenant Joshua 24:1–28 Joshua gathered the tribes and recounted their story as God’s people. He set up a stone under an oak to bear witness to the people’s renewed covenant with God.
13. Aug. 25 Join the celebration Psalm 148 All the earth should praise the name of the Lord, for God commanded and all were created. God is exalted above all things and yet extends help to the faithful.
