Fall 2011 — God and Moses: Stories from Exodus

Sept. 5
Moses is born Exodus 1:1–2:10 The Israelites were fruitful and multiplied, despite being oppressed. Shiphrah and Puah saved the Hebrew boys. Moses’ sister and Pharaoh’s daughter helped rescue Moses. God gives us courage.
2. Sept. 11 God calls Moses Exodus 2:23–3:22 An angel appeared to Moses in a bush that burned but was not consumed. God called Moses to lead Israel out of Egypt and told him that the Israelites would listen to him. God raises up leaders to bring people out of suffering.
3. Sept. 18 Moses accepts Exodus 4 God gave Moses three signs so that the people would believe. God also gave Aaron as Moses’ spokesperson. The Israelites were moved that God had seen their misery. We are given what we need to respond to God’s call.
4. Sept. 25 Straw and bricks
in Egypt
Exodus 5:1–6:9 Moses asked Pharaoh to let the slaves worship God. Pharaoh called the slaves lazy and required harder work. Moses was discouraged, but God promised rescue. Don’t give up on God.
5. Oct. 2 The plagues Exodus 7–11 Moses and Aaron continued to speak to Pharaoh but Pharaoh refused to let the Israelites leave Egypt. God sent nine plagues and warned about a tenth. God never gives up.
6. Oct. 9

Oct. 10: Thanksgiving (Canada)
Passover lessons Exodus 12:1–13:16 God explained Passover and sent the tenth plague. The Israelites left Egypt, taking along dough that had not had time to rise. Israel’s firstborn were consecrated. We remember God's faithfulness.
7. Oct. 16 God leads
the people
Exodus 13:17–15:21 God led the people as Pharaoh pursued them. Moses parted the Red Sea with his staff and the Israelites passed through. Everyone celebrated and the women danced with joy. God frees us.
8. Oct. 23 The people
grumble
Exodus 15:22–17:7 The Israelites entered the wilderness and complained about the lack of food and water. God heard their cries and gave them quails and enough bread and water for each day. God provides for our needs.
9. Oct. 30 Jethro counsels Moses Exodus 18 Moses’ father-in-law, Jethro, came to visit. He saw that leadership tasks were too heavy for Moses to carry alone. Moses listened to Jethro’s ideas about delegating leadership. We do God's work together.
10. Nov. 6 Ten commandments Exodus 19:1–20:21 The Israelites reached Mount Sinai and received the Ten Commandments. God gave laws and covenanted to be with the people as they entered the Promised Land. Younger: God gives us rules.

Older: God gives us guidance for relationships.
11. Nov. 13 The golden calf Exodus 24:12–18; 32:1–34:10 While Moses was gone, the people begged Aaron to make a god for them, and he made them a golden calf. God was angry but forgave the people and renewed the covenant. God forgives.
12. Nov. 20

Nov. 24: Thanksgiving (United States)
Moses, a great leader Numbers 27, Deuteronomy 34 Moses judged an inheritance case and appointed Joshua as the people’s new leader. Moses saw the Promised Land, died, and was honored. God helps us make good decisions.

Second Sunday of Advent
John baptizes with water Matthew 3:1–12 John the Baptist prepared the way of the Lord, urging people to repent and be baptized. John baptized with water, but said one more powerful was still to come. Younger: Get ready for Jesus.

Older: We prepare for God's new way.
3. Dec. 11

Third Sunday
of Advent
The prophet brings good news Isaiah 61 The prophet Isaiah encouraged the people of Israel who were held captive. He told them that God will comfort those who mourn and make the oppressed like mighty oaks. Proclaim the good news.

Fourth Sunday of Advent
The family
of Jesus
Matthew 1:1–25 Joseph, a descendant of Abraham, learned that his intended wife Mary was pregnant. An angel told him that the child was from the Holy Spirit, and should be named Jesus. We trust in God's extraordinary ways.

Christmas Day
Jesus is born Luke 2:1–20 Jesus was born in a Bethlehem stable. Mary wrapped him in cloths and laid him in a manger. Shepherds were the first to come and celebrate his birth. We marvel at Jesus' birth.

Epiphany Sunday
A visit from
the magi
Matthew 2:1–12 The magi came from the east to honor Jesus and offer gifts. They were warned in a dream to not tell Herod where they had found the baby. We offer our gifts to Jesus.
7. Jan. 8 Escape to Egypt Matthew 2:13–23 An angel warned Joseph to escape to Egypt because Herod planned to destroy baby Jesus. Joseph, Mary, and Jesus returned to Nazareth after Herod’s death. We remember that Jesus was kept safe.
8. Jan. 15 Jesus is baptized, then tempted Matthew 3:13–4:11 John baptized Jesus in the Jordan River. The Spirit of God descended on Jesus. He was identified as the Son of God. Jesus resisted temptations in the wilderness. We choose God's way.
9. Jan. 22 Jesus calls disciples Matthew 4:18–22; 9:9–13; 10:2–16 Jesus called fishermen and a tax collector to be his followers. Jesus said he came to call sinners, not the righteous. He gave instructions and sent out the disciples. Jesus calls his disciples and sends them out.
10. Jan. 29 Being salt
and light
Matthew 4:23–5:16 Jesus proclaimed God’s good news by healing the sick and teaching about God’s way. Jesus called his followers give glory to God by being salt and light for the world. When we do good works, we give glory to God.
11. Feb. 5 Giving, praying, fasting Matthew 6:1–18 Jesus taught the disciples to give to charity anonymously, to pray humbly, and to fast privately. God rewards faithful acts done in secret. Live your faith humbly.
12. Feb. 12 Live truly Matthew 7:1–12 In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus told his followers to avoid judging others harshly, to seek God earnestly, and to treat others as they would wish to be treated. Jesus teaches us how to live wisely.
13. Feb. 19

Feb.22: Ash Wednesday
Jesus heals
a servant
Matthew 8:5–13 A Roman centurion asked Jesus to speak a word of healing for his servant. Jesus commended his faith and told him the servant would be healed. Outsiders can be positive examples.

Jesus walks

Matthew 14:23–33 Jesus walked on water. The disciples were terrified because they thought it was a ghost. Peter asked to come but then began to sink. Jesus rescued him. Jesus calms us in our fears.

Matthew 18:10–22 Jesus said that little ones are to be cared for. He said that a shepherd would leave 99 sheep to look one lost sheep. Jesus taught people to resolve conflicts and forgive freely. We are to seek the lost.

Fourth Sunday in Lent
Caring for those in need Matthew 25:31–46 Jesus will return in glory. All will come before him and he will separate people based on how they have treated those who are sick, hungry, imprisoned, or strangers. The way we care for others is the way we care for Jesus.

Fifth Sunday
in Lent
A woman anoints Jesus Matthew 26:1–13 A woman anointed Jesus with expensive ointment. When the disciples complained, Jesus explained that it was preparation for his coming death and burial. We show our devotion to Jesus.
5. April 1

Palm Sunday
Jesus' arrest and crucifixion Matthew 26:36–27:66 Jesus prayed alone before he was arrested and put on trial. He was rejected by the high priest, denied by Peter, and handed over to the governor to be crucified. Jesus stayed true to God's way of love.
6. April 8

Easter Sunday
Jesus is risen Matthew 28:1–10 When Mary and Mary Magdalene went to the tomb, an angel told them that Jesus was alive. Jesus met the women on the road and sent a message to the disciples. Jesus lives.
7. April 15 The great commission Matthew 28:16–20 Jesus met his friends in Galilee and commissioned them to make disciples, teach, and baptize. Jesus promised to always be with his followers. Jesus sends us and promises to be with us.
8. April 22 Walking and leaping and praising God Acts 3:1–10 Peter and John went to pray at the temple, and Peter healed a man lame from birth. An astonished crowd gathered to watch the man walking, leaping, and praising God. Jesus' spirit opens doors for us.
9. April 29 Enough for all Acts 4:32–35; 6:1–7 The community of believers shared their possessions, caring for widows and others in need. The group commissioned seven people to oversee the fair distribution of food. We care for each other by being fair.
10. May 6 Philip shares the good news Acts 8:4–8, 26–40 Philip proclaimed Jesus’ message in Samaria. God’s spirit directed him to explain the good news to an important Ethiopian official. The official asked Philip to baptize him. The good news is for everyone.
11. May 13 Saul sees
the light
Acts 9:1–22 Saul persecuted Christians. On the road to Damascus, he was blinded by God. The disciple Ananias healed and baptized him, and he began to proclaim Jesus as Son of God God can change people in surprising ways.
12. May 20 Tabitha, a disciple Acts 9:32–43 Peter visited the saints in Lydda. Tabitha, a disciple who did many kind acts, became ill and died. God answered Peter’s prayer and she returned to life and health. We use our gifts to build the community.
13.May 27 A rescue
from prison
Acts 12:1–17 Peter was imprisoned by King Herod. An angel freed him and led him out of the city. He went to a house where followers of Jesus were praying. They were amazed to see him. We pray for each other.

Walking away from conflict Genesis 26:12–33 The Philistines envied Isaac for his wealth. The king sent Isaac away but later recognized that God was with Isaac. The two covenanted with one other and parted in peace. Depart in peace.
2. June 10 Be reconciled Philemon Paul encouraged Philemon to make things right with Onesimus. Paul wanted Philemon to see Onesimus not as a slave, but as a beloved brother. Work to restore broken relationships.
3. June 17 The daughters of Zelophehad Numbers 27:1–11 Five sisters wanted to inherit their father’s property. They challenged the practice of passing on land only to the male lineage. Moses and God approved the sisters’ request. Be persistent in working for justice.
4. June 24 Say you're sorry 1 Samuel 25:1–35 David and his men prepared for war because Nabal had insulted them. Nabal’s wife, Abigail, averted war by offering gifts and apologizing for Nabal’s actions. Say you're sorry.
5. July 1 Getting along Matthew 18:15–22 Jesus laid out a plan for resolving disputes in the community.  He said that he is present when two or three gather in his name. He called on the disciples to forgive freely. We can agree and disagree in love.
6. July 8 Elisha turns back the soldiers 2 Kings 6:8–23 Elisha thwarted the Aramean army’s plan for attack. God blinded the army and led them to the Israelites. The king of Israel was told to feed the soldiers and send them in peace. Use words to make peace.
7. July 15 Jerusalem Council Acts 15:1–35 A council met to decide about accepting newcomers to the Christian faith. Through debate, careful listening, and consensus, the leaders agreed on a plan of action. Discerning God's will takes care and time.
8. July 22 Blessings from Jesus Matthew 5:1–12 Jesus offered blessings to those who value God’s way above human favor and success. God’s new community is marked by vulnerability, mercy, and peacemaking. God blesses peacemakers.
9. July 29 Loving each other Mark 12:28–34 Jesus told a scribe that the first commandment is to love God; the second is to love your neighbor as yourself. The scribe then affirmed these truths. Love God and others.
10. Aug. 5 A community of peacemakers Romans 12:9–21 Paul’s advice for peacemakers: love truly, be hopeful and patient, pray, be hospitable to strangers, bless those who persecute you, overcome evil with good. Overcome evil with good.
11. Aug. 12 Respect everyone James 2:1–13 James said that Christians must not favor the wealthy over the poor. They are to love their neighbors as themselves and show mercy to others, for mercy triumphs over judgment. Treat everyone fairly.
12. Aug. 19 Claim a vision of peace Isaiah 2:1–5 Isaiah envisioned a day when many peoples would follow God’s ways. Then, swords will be turned into plowshares and wars will cease. Trust that God's ways are peaceful ways.
13. Aug. 26 A time of peace Zechariah 8:1–8 Zechariah pictured a community shaped by God’s peace. The old and young will be in the streets together. All ages will feel secure and enjoy life together. The church can be a model of God's peace.
